Patch 12.1 · Curse of Ula'tek

What to Do First in Curse of Ula'tek

Patch 12.1 is live. Season 2 is not. I put together a clean Week One Survival Guide so you can focus on the shit that actually matters!

Live nowPatch 12.1 · Preseason Week
The Short Version

If you only care about being ready for Season 2, finish the campaign, unlock the Coiled Isle systems, get your weekly Spark, run each Season 2 Mythic 0 once if you want the gear, unlock Tier 8+ Delves, finish the Omnium Folio if you skipped it, and fill your Great Vault. The rest is optional. Reputation, cosmetics, housing, fishing, achievements — all of that will still be there.

Live Update — August 12

There are two launch-week gearing details that are worth changing your plans for.

Both of these were discovered after the patch went live, so this section may change again if Blizzard hotfixes anything.

Patch 12.1 Week One ChecklistWhat I would actually get done before Season 2 starts.
Priority: Do These First

Optional / Collector Stuff

1. Finish the Campaign PrerequisiteIf Return to Amani'Zar is missing, this is probably why.

Patch 12.1 picks up directly from the chapter Blizzard released in early July. If you never finished Legacy of the Amani, start with Hagar's Invitation. You have to finish that chapter before Chapter 2 will send you to the Coiled Isle.

Your Launch Quest

Once that is done, Patch 12.1 starts with Return to Amani'Zar. I would just push the campaign until you reach the Coiled Isle and come back for the side stuff afterward.

When you get there, grab the flight path at Tokka's Landing immediately. I would also set my Hearthstone there for the preseason week because you are going back and forth between the island and Silvermoon until better travel opens up.

2. Unlock the Coiled IsleIt is basically a surface zone with another giant zone underneath it.

The Coiled Isle is the new outdoor zone introduced in Patch 12.1. · Blizzard Entertainment

The Coiled Isle is basically two zones. You have the surface, which has the main hub, Curse Surges, rares, treasures, fishing, two regular Delves, and the Tidebound Grotto Lair. Then underneath all of that are the Vaults of Atal'Utek, which are much more combat-focused and do not allow flying mounts.

Zul'jarra's Forces

Zul'jarra's Forces are the patch's main 20-rank Renown faction at Tokka's Landing. The campaign gives you a good chunk of reputation to start with, and after that you can keep earning it through the usual Coiled Isle activities.

If you do not care about grinding Renown, that is fine. The early ranks are still worth checking because Renown 2 already opens a Veteran wrist reward.

Curse SurgesRotating events with a weekly quest and Cursed Fishing attached.
A venomous serpentine enemy appears during a Curse Surge on the Coiled Isle
Curse Surges rotate through five areas of the Coiled Isle. · Blizzard Entertainment

Curse Surges rotate through five locations around the island. You finish the event, kill the rare elite, collect the rewards, and eventually the Surge moves somewhere else. Clearing one also unlocks Cursed Fishing in that area.

The weekly Turn Back the Surge asks you to clear three Curse Surges. It lists a Spark of Tides as a reward, but Blizzard is currently investigating reports that the Spark does not always show up correctly. So if you just want to make sure you get your weekly Spark, I would use one of the Silvermoon weeklies below for now.

Captain Tokka and Cursed FishingCompletely optional unless you actually want the fishing rewards.

Captain Tokka has a separate friendship reputation tied to Cursed Fishing. Working through it opens more fishing activities and rewards including cosmetics, decor, a mount, and the Coiled Huntress fishing pole.

If you do not care about fishing, skip it. This does not affect your raid or Mythic+ progression.

Collector Note: Student of Hissstory

There are 10 lore objects around the Coiled Isle. Finding all of them earns Student of Hissstory — and yes, Blizzard really spelled it that way — plus the Cursed Badge of the Soulcoilers toy that turns you into a Child of Ula'tek.

3. Unlock the Vaults of Atal'UtekThere are two Corrosion systems here, and the naming makes this way more confusing than it needs to be.
The underground Vaults of Atal'Utek glow with green corruption beneath the Coiled Isle

Once the campaign sends you underground, pick up Into the Vaults of Atal'Utek and follow the introduction. Grab the flight paths while you are down there too. You cannot fly normally inside the Vaults, so those are actually useful.

Altar of Corrosion

The Altar uses Spirit Corrosion to unlock a talent tree that only works on the Coiled Isle and inside the Vaults. Corrosive Coins are the main currency you use to move that system forward.

This is outdoor-zone power. It does not work in normal raids or dungeons.

Corrosive Codex

The Codex is the separate system. It uses Corrosive Souls to permanently unlock Corrosive Gifts, and those passives work throughout Midnight's open world and inside Delves.

You start with one active Gift. Once you have unlocked eight different Gifts, you can run two at the same time.

If you run Delves, the Codex is the part you care about. The Altar's talents are mostly for the new zone, but Corrosive Gifts carry into Delves and unlock across your Warband.
Vault EventsPatrols → Strikes → Incursion → Ancient Foe

The Vaults are built around a repeating public-event loop. Temple Patrols and Temple Strikes feed into a Temple Incursion, and finishing that eventually spawns an Ancient Foe. This is one of the main ways you earn Corrosive Coins, Corrosive Souls, reputation, and the Vault-specific rewards.

Ancient Foes are also more useful for Week One gearing than they looked at first. Killing one rewards a Venom-Drenched Sack with 10 Champion Mistcrests and a Veteran piece, and your first Ancient Foe of the week also gives a Corrosive Soul and a Venom-Cursed Fragment.

If you are mostly here for raid and Mythic+, you still do not need to farm the Vaults all week. But if an Incursion is about to finish while you are already down there, the Ancient Foe afterward is worth sticking around for.

4. Week One Gearing: What Actually MattersThis week counts, but it is still preseason.
Mythic 0

All eight Season 2 dungeons are available on Mythic 0 now, including Altar of Fangs. M0 drops item level 292 Champion 1/6 gear.

For this preseason week only, each Mythic 0 is on a weekly lockout. The lockout becomes daily when Season 2 starts August 18.

Great Vault

What you do this week already counts toward Season 2 Great Vault rewards. You just cannot claim those rewards until August 18.

If you are gearing this character, fill the useful Vault slots you can this week instead of waiting for the season to officially start.

Do not confuse this with Mythic+. Mythic 0 is open. Mythic+ does not begin until August 18.
Easy Veteran GearUseful for upgrades, alts, and cheaper upgrades later.

The original Midnight Renown factions have updated Season 2 Veteran rewards, and Zul'jarra's Forces adds another early Veteran piece. If you already have the Renown requirements, these are basically free upgrades.

The Veteran pieces can also save you crests later. WoW remembers the highest item level you have reached in a slot, so pushing the lower track first can reduce what it costs to upgrade the Champion or Hero piece that replaces it.

Get Your Sparks of TidesThere are two available this week, with a possible third on some characters.

The launch-week Spark situation is a little weird. Right now, every character can get two Sparks of Tides this week.

Your first comes from Trailing Xal'atath in Silvermoon, which asks for 100 Fading Voidwhispers from things like dungeons, Delves, rares, and treasures. You are probably going to finish this naturally if you are already doing Week One content.

Your second can come from the Sparks of War weekly quests in Silvermoon. These require War Mode, but you do not actually have to go hunt players; world quests, treasures, and the other listed objectives count. There are also reports of some non-PvP weeklies filling that second-Spark slot.

Possible third Spark: If that character never completed Midnight: World Tour during Season 1, the old one-time quest is currently awarding another Season 2 Spark. Characters that already completed it cannot repeat it. This looks unintended and Blizzard may change how it works, so consider the third Spark a bonus if you have access to it, not something every character is supposed to have.

Turn Back the Surge also lists a Spark reward, but players have reported inconsistent results from it. Until Blizzard sorts that out, I would not make it your only plan for one of the two normal Sparks.

Finish the Omnium FolioThe 12.0.7 power system did not expire with Season 1.

If you skipped the Omnium Folio, go finish it. Blizzard built it to last through the rest of Midnight, all five progression steps are available now, and it is free character power that does not take up a gear slot.

The starting quest is The Magisters' Call from the Magister's Missive near the Ritual Site vendors in Silvermoon. Once you have done the introduction on one character, your alts can skip it.

5. Delves: Use This Week to Unlock the LadderGet your tiers unlocked now. The real rewards turn on next week.

Patch 12.1 adds three Delves:

  • The Ring of Glory
  • Gnarldor Isle
  • Venomfall Deeps — the Season 2 Nemesis Delve

During preseason, Delve Tiers 1–11 are available along with the lower ? Nemesis difficulty. What is not active yet are Bountiful Delves, Coffer Keys, the ?? Nemesis difficulty, and the normal Season 2 reward structure.

Your Week One Delve Goal

At minimum, get Tier 8 unlocked. Then when Bountiful Delves turn on August 18, you can start there instead of spending the first day of the season working your way back up.

Do not use your Trovehunter's Bounty early. Vaults of Atal'Utek: A Toxic Tour gives you a Season 2 Trovehunter's Bounty this week. Once Tier 8 is unlocked, activate the map immediately before a Tier 8 or higher Delve. The Hidden Trove at the end will contain an item level 305 Hero 1/6 piece. This works even though Bountiful Delves are not active yet.

If you are going after the first-week Nemesis Feat of Strength, practice Azta'rec on ? now. The ?? difficulty opens August 18, and the solo kill has to happen during the first week of Season 2 for the special Fabled achievement and title.

Altar of FangsThe new dungeon is already in the Mythic 0 rotation.

Altar of Fangs is the new three-boss dungeon inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek:

  1. Rav'i
  2. The Writhing Coil
  3. Zul'jan

It is available on Heroic and Mythic 0 during preseason and joins the Mythic+ pool when Season 2 begins.

The Tidebound GrottoWorld bosses basically work like one-boss raids now.

Lairs are basically instanced world bosses with real difficulty options. Patch 12.1's first one is The Tidebound Grotto, where you fight Nymrissa Wavecaller.

During preseason, only World difficulty is open, and it drops Season 2 Veteran gear. Normal, Heroic, and flexible Mythic open on August 18. Lair kills also count toward the raid row of the Great Vault.

Prey During PreseasonNormal and Hard now. Nightmare next week.

Season 2 Prey is already available in a limited form. Normal and Hard are open during preseason, while Nightmare and Curse of the Isle wait until August 18.

If you like Prey, there is Season 2 Veteran gear available this week. If you do not, skip it.

Housing Changes Worth KnowingBlueprints are the biggest change here.
Blueprints

You can save, import, export, and share house builds. There are 50 manual layout slots plus 10 autosave slots, and builds can cover individual rooms, interiors, exteriors, or the entire house.

Pet Beds

You can place up to 10 Pet Beds indoors and 5 outdoors. Each bed can be assigned a companion pet. Indoor pets can roam or remain stationary; outdoor pets are stationary.

The dye system has also been condensed from dozens of individual colors into nine base dye categories, which should save a ton of bag space.

Raid and Catalyst ChangesRaid loot matters a lot more in Season 2.

Raid rewards in the Great Vault now jump to the next track: LFR → Champion, Normal → Hero, Heroic → Myth, while Mythic raid Vault rewards arrive fully upgraded at Myth 6/6. Very Rare items and rewards from the final two Mythic bosses can go beyond the normal Myth upgrade ceiling.

The Catalyst also changed in an important way: converted tier pieces now inherit the original item's secondary stats and cantrip effects. So the piece you put into the Catalyst matters.

Get your four-piece first. You can worry about replacing the pieces with bad stats after the set bonus is active.
Bonus Rolls: One Important Timing NoteThe first Season 2 Vault will not offer one.

Nebulous Voidcores continue as the bonus-roll currency, and raid bonus rolls now cost one Voidcore instead of two. However, Blizzard clarified that you cannot choose a Voidcore from the first Season 2 Great Vault on August 18. The first Vault opportunity arrives the following week, August 25, and requires at least three Vault panes unlocked.

If You Only Do Eight Things This Week
  1. Finish the campaign and unlock the Coiled Isle.
  2. Unlock Atal'Utek, the Altar of Corrosion, and the Corrosive Codex.
  3. Get the two Sparks of Tides available this week.
  4. Run the Mythic 0 world tour if you want gear.
  5. Unlock Tier 8+ Delves.
  6. Use your Trovehunter's Bounty on a Tier 8+ Delve for the 305 Hero piece.
  7. Finish the Omnium Folio.
  8. Fill your Great Vault.

After that, do whatever you actually want to do. Fishing, Renown, treasures, housing, achievements, Vault farming, and cosmetics are not going anywhere.

Sources and VerificationNames, dates, item levels, and unlocks were checked against live sources.
Verified August 12, 2026

I pulled the topics together from several community videos, then checked the names, dates, unlocks, item levels, and system behavior against Blizzard's live Patch 12.1 / Season 2 information and current Wowhead pages. When older PTR information disagreed with what actually launched, the live version wins.
